[Solved] [BIOS-UPDATE] <A22> Dell Inspirion 5100 Laptop Black Screen After Flashing BIOS

Problem: Black Screen (No Post/No Beep) After Flashing The A2
Hardware: Dell Inspirion 5100
Software: BIOS Firmware Update
Part Req: 256+ MB DDR2100 266MHZ RAM
Skill Req: Easy-Intermediate
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

** If you are experiencing a black screen that appears to not be doing anything. No post (no Dell logo screen) (no Beeps)
This is due to the memory in the laptop is running at a speed that is not supported (apparently) by the new firmware update.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution #1:

1) Remove Power Supply AC Adapter and Battery from the laptop. (You do not want power going to the machine while doing this)
2) Remove the memory compartment cover.
3) Very carefully press the two silver prongs on either side of the memory stick until it pops up a little bit.
4) Very carefully remove the memory from the laptop. (DO NOT TOUCH GOLD PINS)
5) Place a DDR2100 memory module into DIMM-A

You should now be able to get the laptop to boot up as normal, This will allow you to get into windows (or reinstall windows) in order to do the windows-based A31 or A32 BIOS update that corrects the memory timing issue.

[Solved] [Vista/7] <Bluescreen: 0x0000007b // 0x7b> Changing motherboard with different IDE/ACHI/RAID controller

Problem: Hardware changes to IDE/ACHI/RAID controller.
Hardware: New motherboard or RAID controller
Software: Windows Vista or Windows 7
Skill Req: Hardcore Tech (This is by no means "easy")
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

** If you are having looping problems and are unable to catch the blue screen (if you watch close you may see a blue flash before the reboot) then press the F8 key until the windows boot menu loads (you may have to tell the machine to boot from the HDD if your bios also uses the boot menu with F8 first). The options for the windows boot menu are things like (safe mode / safe mode with networking / ect) the one you are looking for will be "Disable automatic restart on windows failure". This will allow you to see the blue screen and obtain the error string.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution #1:

Reinstalling windows vista/7 on top of itself using "upgrade" option provided from a "FULL" install of vista/7. This method is only
possible if you know exactly what version of vista/7 service pack you are on, and have the exact same version on media (DVD/USB).
This is easily accomplished for anything under SP2 (which they decided to REMOVE slip streams). I would attempt this method first.

1) Insert Windows DVD/USB into machine
2) Boot from DVD/USB
3) Continue to install like normal
4) DO NOT ENTER A WINDOWS KEY WHEN ASKED! just hit next, and tell it you do not want to enter a key.
5) Select the version of vista/7 you have installed. (This will not allow you to upgrade to ultimate for free, don't try)
6) If you have an option called "Upgrade" selectable, you are in luck and can restore the easy way.
If you do not have that option and only "complete install" is accessible this method will not work for you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution #2: (The nightmare process version #1)

This method requires a lot of time, a lot of patience, and a lot of luck. It also requires knowledge of how to obtain and use
a windows PE disk. (This can be any version of PE).

The easiest resolution is to inject the new driver into the proper location to get the machine to work again. I have successfully
accomplished this once using windows PE and a driver injection tool (I will post the location of the post where I obtained it later)

1) Boot into Windows PE
2) Run Driver Injection Tool
3) Select your new driver
4) Reboot

If that brings up windows, hurray, it wasn't that hard now was it?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution #3 (Complexity Infernal)

So, what happens if the above then fails... is all lost? is a reload required?
Luck for you there is a method that can be accomplished that allows for that not to be required yet.

For this you will need the following:

1) Windows PE (or a bootable Linux) **either of these will work
2) A spare HDD (or something large enough to install windows, so at least 4GB)
3) A lot of time

Phase #1:
1) Install windows vista/7 (the version you have installed on the other machine, this is currently unverified between multiple versions)
** You do not need to insert the windows key during this installation.

Phase #2:
1) Connect both drives together (or if needed you can use a flash drive/burn to CD the files that we will need to move)
2) Load Windows PE (or LINUX)
3) On the fresh install navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config
4) Copy all those files they will not have extensions and be named (SYSTEM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, ECT)
5) On the original drive go to *:\Windows\System32\Config
6) Make a New Folder (Original)
7) Copy all the files from the original drive into the new folder (This is a backup)
8) Copy the SYSTEM file from the new install to the original drive (It is now safe to override it)

At this point you can attempt to restart the machine and see if it boots up properly. I was unsuccessful with the machine I applied this on however it is virtually the same as the driver injection method above just without the "guessing the proper driver" issue.

If this fails still however, you will get a new blue screen message or failure that is not related to the 0x7B issue (at least that is solved).

9) Copy the SAM file from the new install to the original install (again you can override as you have a backup)

This has some drawbacks. Starting with the fact that your user account is basically broken. Your documents and files are safe (aside from if you have them encrypted, as which point there is little I can do for you, and some basic settings have to be redone (program settings, outlook settings, desktop settings, ect). However, it allows you back into the system.

You should now have access to the system, and thanks to the SOFTWARE being the original most all of the software should work without any issues. Microsoft office did a repair on itself on the machine I did this with and otherwise remained happily activated and functional.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Known Issues:

There is a known issue with the method that requires that SYSTEM be replaced. All the system drivers are stored in the SYSTEM file (this is the core registry file) because of this any programs that rely on having a driver installed (Including most anti-viruses) will fail to operate until they are reinstalled.

There is of course the user account issue if you have to replace SAM. I'm not entirely sure if this is always needed or if there was a prior problem with the customers user-account before I started working on it that may have been related. The method #3 does get you back in with minimal damage and not having to reload.

Slowdowns and Speed. It is possible that old drivers in the SYSTEM (using method #2) can cause the machine to act unnaturally slow due to still trying to load the old drivers. It is possible to go into device manager and disable/remove non-required drivers but that goes beyond the scope of this post.

This is a messy operation and none of these methods should be attempted unless absolutely needed and due to mission critical data being saved. The best method for resolving this is to do a backup of important data files and a fresh clean reload. This will always provide the best and most streamlined results.

Developer Update: 10.05.10

A new section arises from the ashes of the old. Decided that things would appear less messy if we separated the update logs from the main forum section. It will prove must vital later as things begin to progress more and more.

For those of you who have not read the main article attached to the changes for v1. I'll give a quick break down of what is going on. I've effectively scrapped the Kreature project as you know it, replaced it with a different Kreature project, and wrapped it all together in a nice little package. What does that mean exactly? Well, it was time to go back to basics. The objective of the game when designed was to simply be a Kreature game, I, as i often enjoy doing, like to complicate things by trying to go above and beyond and do a billion extra things because they sound exciting or seem like they would be cool to do. This is great and all but when you are working on time schedules you just can't do everything. Thus, scrap, recollect, and rebuild.

Kreature has been effectively split into two versions. Version 1, also known as "Remix" which is a variation of the original plan (just a kreature game) and a few new ideas I've put together, and what is known now as Version 2, which will be a "commercial" quality web-based game, with a goal of at least a 20-40hr storyline, but more on that as it develops later down the road.

In development right now is Kreature version 1. Kreature version 1 makes use of all that hard work I've already put into the engine, aside from the fabled "map-engine" which I've opted against for the timing being. It added a level of complexity that isn't needed for the success of this project, and it is possible that if demand grows enough it can be re-added as required. Humanoid*-Mode and "Hard-Mode" have been removed from Version 1. The choice to build the engine using IRC as well was done because I've done a lot of work using mIRC script before and it is very easy for me to churn out a full game engine very quickly. Allowing everyone to enjoy it that much quicker. Presently the IRC engine will be completed before the WEB-based engine.

 Features of Version 1.0
<*> Web-based game play. -- The ability to play the game online graphically through a web browser.
<*> IRC-based game play -- The ability to play the same game online using your favorite IRC client.
<Server> City -- Each server running the "Kreature-IRC Engine" will be dubbed its own CITY
<*> Forge Alliances -- Forge trade alliances with cities to trade rare and exclusive items, materials, and Kreatures.
<*> <!> Ku is a irc.kraventech.biz exclusive Kreature (limited) and is only available to prior registered members (prior to 10-1-10) -- NO EXCEPTIONS
<*> Forge War -- Take your Kreatures to war against neighboring cities to plunder resources and win awards.
<*> City Management -- Elect a mayor Kreature to establish a city name, city defense, city taxes, and other mayor-like duties.
<*> Send your Kreature(s) to explore the area around the city to capture new Kreatures, find exciting new items, and more.
<*> Action Point System: Use hourly refilled points to take "Direct" control of a Kreature to make them do exactly what you want.
